What is a webcam
A webcam is basically an inexpensive simple video camera that sits on top of your computer monitor.

It's designed to send live and recorded video over the net to one or more users.

They often also have microphones built in so you can see and chat with friends online.


An eyeball camera
You can use some digital cameras as webcams as well but the cheapest solution is normally an eyeball camera. Not all of these have a microphone so double check before you buy.


What you need to set one up
To use a simple webcam you need four things:

The camera - these range in price from 50 - 150 pounds. It's a good idea to start cheap and see how much you use the camera before spending too much money.
The camera software - this will come with the camera when you buy it, ordinarily on a CD. You just run the CD and it should automatically install your camera software so you are ready to go.
Software to run the camera online - you may get this with your camera but it's a good idea to use popular software or online services. This could be an instant messenger program or a videoconferencing program.
An internet connection - a dial-up connection will not be fast enough for video chats using a webcam. Both you and the other user will need a broadband connection.
